Year 5 & Year 6
Term 2
Week 6
Thank you to everyone who came along to celebrate our fantastic learning from this term at our Open Classroom event.
We were visited by the astronomers from Warwick University who taught us about the planets and constellations. They brought the planetarium with them and we had a magical time gazing at the sky!
Week 5
The Year 5 children have been working very hard on their cycling for Bikeability!
Jazz Class said a fond farewell to Claire and Albi this morning.
We were visited by Siobhan from Severn Trent who taught us how to save water!
Week 4
The Mental Health Ambassadors did a brilliant job of leading us for Anti-bullying Week. They led collective worship to teach the rest of the school about what bullying is and what you can do if you think you might be being bullied. Benjamin had written a story about anti-bullying which the children acted out for the rest of the school. They are excited to be celebrating Unique Hair Day on Friday where we will be celebrating our differences by coming to school with fun hair or headwear.
Week 3
Jazz Class have been working hard to make their charity pom poms which will raise money for our House Charities this year! You can purchase them on Parent Pay or at Ilmington village shop!
Well done to the winners and runners up of the Bonfire Night art competition!
Week 2
Jazz Class have been learning about the Apollo 11 moon landing! They ordered key events in the history of space travel, before researching the Apollo 11 moon landing. They used their knowledge to work with others to put together a script for a news report about the moon landing. The children acted their drama out for the rest of the class!
Year 5 and Year 6 have been busily working away, making Christmas pudding decorations to sell in order to raise money for their house charities! These are available for £2.00 per decoration, and can be ordered by paying on Parent Pay and emailing jazz@welearn365.com to say how many decorations you would like along with your child's name.
The Mental Health Ambassadors have started off Ilmington School's Anti-bullying Week by leading collective worship. They taught the rest of the school about what bullying is and what they can do if they think they are being bullied. Benjamin had written a fantastic story about anti-bullying, which the Mental Health Ambassadors acted out, with Benjamin narrating. On Friday, the whole school will be celebrating our differences with a Unique Hair Day!
It's been a snowy day at Ilmington School today!
The Year 5 children were visited by the Warwickshire Fire and Rescue team today who taught them about how to stay safe, including using chargers and extension leads.
Week 1
The Juniors had a memorable visit to Coventry. We have been learning about sikhism and the features of a gurdwara as well as finding out about the importance of Coventry Cathedral. We had a thought-provoking day. Jazz Class have written letters to our friends at the cathedral and the gurdwara to thank them for making us so welcome.
Jazz Class have been learning about remembrance. In Booktalk, the texts that we have been reading have been linked to World War II. The children have been reading war poetry and have used this as inspiration for their own poems. Alfred and Henry read their fantastic poems at the war memorial during our remembrance service. Finlay and Phoebe read sections from For the Fallen by Laurence Binyon as the Chair and Vice-Chair of the School Council. As the oldest child in our school this year, Finlay lay the wreath.
This week, Jazz Class have been working hard to use stop motion animation to make animations that go with our song about the planets. We learned this song to help us to remember which order the planets of our Solar System come in in their distance from the Sun, as well as some interesting facts! We have decided to sing this song to parents and friends at our sharing assembly this term!
Term 1
Week 6
The Mental Health Ambassadors have been working hard to judge the poetry writing competition. The winners will be announced on Wednesday! The House Captains met on Monday to plan their first House Meetings of the year, which will take place next week. They will be introducing their house chant to the rest of the children, and they will be taking suggestions for charities that they could support this year in their fundraising!
Week 5
Well done to everyone for their fantastic work linked to National Poetry Day this week! We had lots of excellent entries for the poetry writing competition; the winners will be announced on Wednesday. For NPD, Jazz Class worked in groups, pairs or on their own, to put together a poetry performance for the rest of the class. They thought about the Steps To Success for a good poetry performance, and they used percussion, acting and sound effects to deliver their poetry.
Week 5
Jazz Class had the very special job of leading this month's Worship Wednesday. The Christian Value that we have been focussing on this term is 'thankfulness'. The children performed a piece of drama, to retell the story of The Thankful Leper. Sid and Immy had written lovely prayers, which they read at the end of the service. The children had chosen the hymn 'Who put the colours in the rainbow?' to sing, because they thought it would help everyone to be thankful for the beauty we see in nature.
Week 4
This week's Computing lessons were all about the Micro:bit! We used our knowledge of programming to make the Micro:bit light up in a series of patterns as an animation. Some people even managed to make it spell out a word! We planned out the designs carefully first, then inputted these into the app before connecting the Micro:bit via the bluetooth to the iPads which sent the animation over. We learned the difference between using a 'forever' block and an 'on start' block.
Week 3
This week, Jazz Class have been learning about tone and shade in their art lessons. They learned how to use pressure to make darker areas and how to create highlights using a rubber. They practised using different techniques, including cross-hatching. The children have been interested in ways that they could create the different textures that they saw on close up photographs of the moon. They collected ideas in their sketchbook to make a mood board linked to the moon!
Week 2
Thank you to everyone who was able to come to our class Welcome Meeting. If you were unable to attend, the topics covered are outlined in our class handbook.
This week, the children have been learning about rhyming couplet poetry. They read the poem Bed in Summer by Robert Lewis Stevenson to help them to work out the features of a good rhyming couplet poem. They wrote their own poems about the Solar System, using their research from this week's science lesson!
It has been an exciting week for the Year 6 children who have been successful in their application for the role of Mental Health Ambassador. This is an important job in our school as the committee's main aim is to improve the mental health of those in our school community. This year's MHAs are: Phoebe, Lexi, Finlay, Benjamin, Sofia, Theo and Isla. These children all wrote fantastic letters to Mrs Keyes to explain why they would be suitable for the role and we are looking forward to seeing them implement all of their great ideas this year. Well done!
Week 1
What a fantastic first few days Jazz Class have had together! The Year 6 children have stepped up and proven themselves to be excellent role models for the children who have just joined our class. It has been so lovely to see them supporting their Year 5 Buddies.
We have been familiarising ourselves with our new topic: Stargazers! The children have written mnemonics to help them to remember the order of the planets in our Solar System.
