Jazz Class Blog
Year 5 & Year 6
Term 1
Week 6
The Mental Health Ambassadors have been working hard to judge the poetry writing competition. The winners will be announced on Wednesday! The House Captains met on Monday to plan their first House Meetings of the year, which will take place next week. They will be introducing their house chant to the rest of the children, and they will be taking suggestions for charities that they could support this year in their fundraising!
Week 5
Well done to everyone for their fantastic work linked to National Poetry Day this week! We had lots of excellent entries for the poetry writing competition; the winners will be announced on Wednesday. For NPD, Jazz Class worked in groups, pairs or on their own, to put together a poetry performance for the rest of the class. They thought about the Steps To Success for a good poetry performance, and they used percussion, acting and sound effects to deliver their poetry.
Week 5
Jazz Class had the very special job of leading this month's Worship Wednesday. The Christian Value that we have been focussing on this term is 'thankfulness'. The children performed a piece of drama, to retell the story of The Thankful Leper. Sid and Immy had written lovely prayers, which they read at the end of the service. The children had chosen the hymn 'Who put the colours in the rainbow?' to sing, because they thought it would help everyone to be thankful for the beauty we see in nature.
Week 4
This week's Computing lessons were all about the Micro:bit! We used our knowledge of programming to make the Micro:bit light up in a series of patterns as an animation. Some people even managed to make it spell out a word! We planned out the designs carefully first, then inputted these into the app before connecting the Micro:bit via the bluetooth to the iPads which sent the animation over. We learned the difference between using a 'forever' block and an 'on start' block.
Week 3
This week, Jazz Class have been learning about tone and shade in their art lessons. They learned how to use pressure to make darker areas and how to create highlights using a rubber. They practised using different techniques, including cross-hatching. The children have been interested in ways that they could create the different textures that they saw on close up photographs of the moon. They collected ideas in their sketchbook to make a mood board linked to the moon!
Week 2
Thank you to everyone who was able to come to our class Welcome Meeting. If you were unable to attend, the topics covered are outlined in our class handbook.
This week, the children have been learning about rhyming couplet poetry. They read the poem Bed in Summer by Robert Lewis Stevenson to help them to work out the features of a good rhyming couplet poem. They wrote their own poems about the Solar System, using their research from this week's science lesson!
It has been an exciting week for the Year 6 children who have been successful in their application for the role of Mental Health Ambassador. This is an important job in our school as the committee's main aim is to improve the mental health of those in our school community. This year's MHAs are: Phoebe, Lexi, Finlay, Benjamin, Sofia, Theo and Isla. These children all wrote fantastic letters to Mrs Keyes to explain why they would be suitable for the role and we are looking forward to seeing them implement all of their great ideas this year. Well done!
Week 1
What a fantastic first few days Jazz Class have had together! The Year 6 children have stepped up and proven themselves to be excellent role models for the children who have just joined our class. It has been so lovely to see them supporting their Year 5 Buddies.
We have been familiarising ourselves with our new topic: Stargazers! The children have written mnemonics to help them to remember the order of the planets in our Solar System.
