French
Intent, Implementation and Impact Statement
Intent
The skills, knowledge and understanding gained through learning a language contribute to the development of children’s oracy and literacy and to their understanding of their own culture and those of others. At Ilmington C of E Primary School, we feel that the earlier a child is exposed to a foreign language, the faster the language in question is acquired. We believe that the early acquisition of French and Spanish at clubs will facilitate the learning of other foreign languages later in life. We will prepare children for the KS3 language curriculum to enable them to transfer confidently and successfully.
Our French curriculum:
- Encourages an interest in language
- Encourages children to find out about other cultures
- Supports children to acquire a new language in a fun and playful way
- Enables children to understand and respond to spoken and written language
- Enables children to speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity
- Supports children to write at varying lengths and for different purposes and audiences
Implementation
Our Key Stage 2 children learn French with our specialist teacher who is a native French-speaker. Children learn to speak, understand and write French words and phrases through a variety of activities. Children begin their lesson by recapping their 'sticky knowledge' (previous learning) so that they are able to build on this with new learning. New vocabulary is discussed and practised, and misconceptions in pronunciation and spelling are corrected promptly to ensure that the children make excellent progress.
Outcomes take a variety of forms and much of the assessment takes place verbally as our French teacher assesses formatively through the lessons. Opportunities to write are recorded in French books.
The children learn about French speaking countries around the world and link this to their learning in Geography.
Impact
Our French curriculum ensures that all pupils develop key language learning skills set out by the National Curriculum, as well as a love of languages and learning about other cultures. The Subject Leader monitors the effectiveness of the language teaching provided throughout the year with termly book trawls, learning walks, planning scrutinies and pupil interviews. The class teacher will monitor the learning and progression made by pupils across the key stage. French is regularly assessed by the specialist teacher to inform planning and also to provide an assessment level for the child at the end of the academic year. The French Subject Leader regularly monitors these assessment sheets.
